Guthrie is involved with the communities that two high schools serve: Union High School and Heritage High School, both within the Evergreen School District at Vancouver, Washington. He has coordinated efforts, both individually and with a team of fellow ASL educators to ensure that the students gain ASL interpreting experience for community events such as holiday concerts, school assemblies, graduation ceremonies and performances like "Signing Idol". Community members who are ASL users can now gain access to those events.
To ensure that the classroom experience matches industry expectations of quality ASL education, Guthrie is expecting to be nationally certified as an ASL educator by the end of 2014. This national certification is recognized and issued by the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA).
Guthrie plans to participate in the expanding role of the ASL program at Evergreen Public Schools by articulating with Portland Community College. This articulation process enables high school students to gain collegiate credit while taking ASL classes.
In addition to the above, Guthrie has participated in the Clark County ASL Advisory board (CCAA) to further strengthen ties to the community, both within the industry and families of students. He facilitates professional development seminars for fellow colleagues, both within and outside of the ASL program. Guthrie is enthusiastic to share the opportunities that technology offers to extend the learning environment beyond the time and space constraints of the traditional classroom.
